Hi everyone,
I’m a student at the University of Cambridge and recently attempted to reapply for GitHub Education benefits. However, my application was rejected because the system detected my location as “out of campus”.
I believe this may be due to a misunderstanding in how campus locations are defined for Cambridge. Unlike many universities, the University of Cambridge does not have a single centralised campus. It is a collegiate university with departments, colleges, and offices distributed across the city.
I suspect the system may be using a single geographic coordinate (possibly around Trinity Lane or a similar central point) as the campus identifier, which would incorrectly classify many legitimate university locations as “off-campus”. This is ridiculous because I was physically present in my department office when applying.
Could you please review how campus location verification is implemented? A more flexible or distributed geolocation approach may be needed for universities without a defined central campus.
